Friendship isn’t built on efficiency.
So please, tell me the unnecessary details of your day.
Here we are, week two of committing to long-form writing. I’ve promised myself a weekly Sunday post, and if you’re curious when this one began: Sunday at 7 pm.
Cutting it close, but still showing up! Doing the darn thing!
I was talking with my roommate recently about why Substack feels exciting to me, and I think it’s this: I don’t need to have everything figured out to start exploring an idea.
On Instagram, there’s often an unspoken expectation to arrive with a conclusion, or to package a thought neatly into a headline or a 60-second voiceover.
As a gal who is still figuring it out, that’s a lot of pressure.
Here, I feel safer to explore ideas that are new and developing – half-baked, even.
Which brings me to something I’ve been noticing lately…
ON MY MIND
In recent conversations, I’ve started to notice how often my friends will apologize for oversharing. They preface their thoughts with disclaimers, worried they’re offering too much context, too many feelings, or too many details.
“Sorry, this is probably more than you need.”
“Not that you needed to know all of that.”
“I don’t know why I shared that.”
To which I say: if we only shared what was necessary, friendship would be incredibly boring. The unnecessary details are what make friendship so beautiful.
Because no, you didn’t need to tell me about how your kids were struggling this morning. But I want to know, because that is a silent weight you carried into the rest of the day.
I didn’t need to know what led you to choose the blue sweater today instead of the pink, but I want to know that you ultimately decided this one looks better with these pants.
I didn’t need to know what your coworkers think of your new boss, but I want to know what the dynamics of your day is from 9 to 5.
Friendship isn’t built on efficiency.
In a world that is moving quickly, I want to sit with you in this coffee shop and hear every detail of your day and how you felt about it. The “unnecessary” details are often the most human ones
So please, tell me the long version. That’s what friends are for.
WHAT I’M SIPPING
I have once again fallen victim to Gen Z marketing (linking a video on how genius they are). No shame in the game.
These new shirley temple Poppis absolutely live up to the hype! 🍒 They are fairly sweet, if you’re into that, and have a hint of vanilla flavoring in there too. I have been sipping these in the late afternoon or early evening when it is too late for caffeine and too early for sleepy time tea. A fun little treat to get me through the latter half of the day!
This isn’t the longest long-form content ever, but we have 50 more weeks of the year to work on that. Baby steps.
Until next week, happy sipping!
